BMC Software and CA are building apps on the Force.com cloud platform...

BMC Software and CA have both teamed up with Salesforce.com to produce applications that are built and run on the latter's Force.com platform.

The tie-ups were announced at Salesforce.com's annual Dreamforce user conference in San Francisco this week, where BMC CEO Bob Beauchamp and CA CEO John Swainson both joined Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff on stage for the announcement.

According to BMC's Beauchamp, the company realises that many customers will continue to want their software on premise but that the Force.com-based technology will be able to generate significant revenue.

The IT service desk software maker is planning to bring its Service Desk Express product to the Force.com platform so businesses can operate their IT support in the cloud.

While development is currently at a very early stage, BMC Service Desk Express on Force.com is expected to emerge as a full product during the second quarter of 2010.

Meanwhile CA announced its plans to build an agile development management tool as a native application on Force.com.

The plan is to integrate CA's Agile Planner with its Clarity project and portfolio management system, which allows for the use of agile and other development methodologies.

Speaking on stage at Dreamforce, CA CEO John Swainson described cloud computing as "the most profound change I've seen in 33 years".

"This is about literally changing the economics of IT for lots and lots of people.

"There's going to be a pre-cloud era and a post-cloud era," he added.
