In the race to squeeze more data into the same storage form factors, Samsung rolled out its first solid-state drives using, which stacks 24 cell layers on top of one another, late last summer. The method provides improved performance, increase reliability, and enhanced power consumption, and Samsung's SSDs were marketed to the server vertical.
Less than a year later, the company is back again with a second generation of drives based on the technology, this time using 32 layers. It's also hoping to expand the market for 3D V-NAND by extending the lineup to high-end PCs in addition to data centers.
Samsung did not disclose the performance difference between the two generations, but it says that the new drives offer twice the performances and use 20 percent less power than SSDs that rely on planar MLC NAND, which stack modules side by side instead of vertically.
Whereas the first-generation drives were only available in 480GB and 960GB capacities, the new SSDs come in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions. Samsung has released no further details on the new drives, such as price and availability, but it did say that additional models will be ready later this year with even further improved reliability and data density.
