Samsung said it has sold more than 600,000 units of its 7-inch Galaxy Tab tablet PC globally, pushing it well toward its goal of selling 1 million units this year, according to a report in the Korea Herald.

The company said consumer demand has been "robust," and is outpacing supply in most countries. The Galaxy Tab, powered by Google's Android OS, is available in more than 30 countries in North America, Europe and Asia.

The device, first released last month, is a challenger to Apple's iPad, though that device has a strong headstart. And the playing field is expected to get much more crowded next year as companies such as Research in Motion, with its Playbook, and HP, with WebOS-based tablets, slated to hit the market next year.
