SAP has inked a deal with Lenovo that will see the two tech firms team up to develop enterprise cloud offerings in China.

For SAP, the partnership will mark the most significant push of the HANA database into the Chinese market.

The companies are also planning to work together to build new technologies based on HANA and Lenovo's data center offerings. SAP and Lenovo will also combine customer acquisition efforts in China, Germany and the U.S.

For Lenovo, the deal is indicative of the company's broader enterprise ambitions. Two years ago this month Lenovo agreed to buy IBM's x86 server business for $2.3 billion in an effort to become a more serious enterprise challenger.

Since then, Lenovo has placed significant emphasis on channel and legacy partnerships to boost sales with established enterprise players, including SAP and EMC. These days, SAP uses Lenovo systems to run the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service, while Lenovo taps into SAP for its ERP operations.

And according to Gerry Smith, COO of Lenovo's PC and Enterprise group, Lenovo has shipped more than 5,000 servers optimized for SAP HANA.
