Nanyang Business School (NBS), the accounting and business faculty of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), has adopted SAS Enterprise Miner for research, consultancy and teaching.

As a school in a technological university, NBS uses state-of-the-art technology in research, consultancy and teaching. NBS has been using SAS software for some years, the Enterprise Miner being a recent adoption.

The Enterprise Miner is primarily used for teaching and research in order to discover new methodologies and applications in statistics.

The data mining tool also relies on a 'point and click' approach, which makes it more enticing for students to use it to master data mining activities. Students in Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Science courses have been reported to increase usage of the system.

In addition, SAS software has also been incorporated into consultancy projects at the school to facilitate faculty staff undertaking such works to keep abreast of developments in business and industry.

"The Enterprise Miner has generated a lot of interest and excitement in a core group of faculty interested in data analysis, data mining, financial engineering and information technology. It is expected that data mining expertise and experience in NBS will increase tremendously in the near future. Data mining applications and the teaching of data mining are also expected to increase," said Professor Koh Hian Chye, Vice Dean of NBS on the impact of Enterprise Miner on NBS.

"To put it simply, SAS software has become indispensable for many faculty members in their research."
