Almost two weeks of controversy came to an end over the weekend when Princeton University, Rice University, and Xerox PARC researchers announced they had broken the four watermarking technologies that were being considered by the Secure Digital Music Initiative as potential standards for protecting digital music files. The eight researchers successfully stripped the watermarks -- digital codes that acted as serial numbers within the music files -- without affecting the original quality of the music. Previous reports that the watermarks had been broken were denied by the SDMI. Full story to follow. -- Robert Lemos, ZDNet News
