At Fall VON in Boston, the SIP Forum took what I believe to be a big step in the advancement of the SIP protocol by releasing SIPconnect.

SIPconnect, the Forum explains, stipulates detained instructions and architecture-related specs necessary for delivery of consistent quality-of-service and low cost SIP-based VoIP calls.

The functionalities in the SIPconnect draft encompasses SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) methods such as usage profiles, implementation instructions, security, multimedia management, NAT transversal, QoS, echo cancellation and even fax/modem transmissions.
