Skype has released a client for Nokia's Symbian phones, the two companies announced on Wednesday.

The client, which is available in the Ovi Store, lets people use the internet telephony (VoIP) service over Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection such as 3G, Edge or GPRS, the companies said.

Nokia smartphones chief Jo Harlow said in the statement that the Ovi Store was seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day, and Nokia believes "the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users".
