Skype users have long wondered when the softphone omnipresence would officially deem their Mac OS and Linux software "official."

Well, it happened today. These utilities are officially branded as Skype for Mac OS X Version 1.0 and Skype for Linux Version 1.0.

I don't think this "graduation" from beta to official will have all that much impact. Why? Skype users tend to collectively have an inquisitive, even risk-taking culture. And inquisitive, risk-taking people are usually not intimidated by the "what-if" qualms that affect some consumers who might feel queasy about using beta software.

But for those who are making the leap:

Skype says its Linux flavor "should run on all distributions that have the required versions of glibc and Qt libraries available." Skype for Linux 1.0is compliant withboth KDE and Gnome desktop managers.

For Skype Mac, you'll need at least OS X v10.3 or newer, and at least a G3 processor.

Are you a Linux or Mac person who has been hesitant about installing Skype until the official version has been released? If so, does today's announcement make a difference to you. Let's start a discussion by posting a TalkBack.
