Sony will make an upgrade to the Palm operating system available to Clie PEG-N710C owners, beginning in November, the company said Tuesday. The Clie PEG-N710C comes with version 3.5.2 of the Palm operating system; the latest version is version 4.1. The $50 upgrade supports 16-bit color, allows applications to be installed directly onto Memory Stick flash memory cards and enables a PC to instantly recognize the handheld as a removable storage device if a Memory Stick is in the device.

Clie PEG-N710C owners will have to send the device to a Sony service center for the upgrade. The $50 fee includes shipping, a CD with new applications and 3 styluses. The latest Clie, the PEG-N760C, comes with version 4.1 of the Palm operating system. --Richard Shim, ZDNet News
