The new feature will be up and running from June 5, 2016, according to a notification St George Bank sent to customers via their mobile banking app.

In addition to changes made to its terms and conditions for mobile banking, pay to mobile, cardless cash, and alert services, the bank said: "We're also introducing Tap & Pay, a new way to make contactless transactions."

The bank added that eligible St George Bank customers will be notified in their mobile banking app of when they will be able to first set up the feature.

Westpac launched its tap-and-pay functionality last year, making it initially available via the Westpac banking app to the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, S5 Mini, Galaxy Alpha, Note 3, Note 4, and Note Edge handsets. The bank continued to roll it out to make the feature available for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge in April.

Tap and pay is only available to Samsung smartphones, which feature the inbuilt secure element (SE), required by the app for security purposes. The app does not currently support non-SE methods.

In making payments using tap and pay, customers are able to use to their personal Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit cards and debit MasterCard cards.
