Some interesting statistics thanks to Steam's hardware and software survey for July 2010.

On the GPU side of things, NVIDIA is still king amongst Steam users:

  • NVIDIA: 59.11%
  • ATI: 32.98%
  • Intel: 6.22%
  • Other: 1.69%

Also, DirectX 10 is still king, with DirectX 11 support in the OS and GPU lagging far behind:

  • DX10: 56.36%
  • DX11: 5.6%

It seems that Steam gamers prefer giving their CPU money to Intel:

  • Intel: 72.37%
  • AMD: 27.63%

2GB of RAM seems the norm, with 3GB and 4GB following closely:

  • Less than 512 MB - 0.56%
  • 512 Mb to 999 MB - 3.37%
  • 1 GB - 9.88%
  • 2 GB - 27.23%
  • 3 GB - 26.17%
  • 4 GB - 22.19%
  • 5 GB and higher - 10.59%

Bad news and good news for Microsoft - Bad news: XP 32-bit is still the gamer's choice. Good news: Windows 7 is gaining ground fast, having already left Vista eating its dust:

  • Windows XP 32 bit - 32.73%
  • Windows 7 64 bit - 28.24%
  • Windows Vista 32 bit - 13.71%
  • Windows 7 - 12.42%
  • Windows Vista 64 bit - 6.72%
  • MacOS 10.6.3 64 bit - 4.30%
  • MacOS 10.5.8 64 bit - 0.77%
  • Windows XP 64 bit - 0.56%
  • Windows 2003 64 bit - 0.31%
  • Other - 0.23%
