SINGAPORE--As part of a new initiative to promote Java applications and services in Asia Pacific, Sun Microsystems and Nokia will market applications developed by companies and individuals under the program.

The Finnish mobile maker also has its own certification called Nokia OK. Sirpa Ikola, Nokia Asia Pacific industry marketing manager for Mobile Phones, said that Nokia's certification will guarantee that the applications run smoothly on handphones.

According to Ikola, Nokia has approximately 50,000 developers in Asia Pacific. Of this, Sun expects to train up to 30,000 to use Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) and recruit another 10,000 developers by the end of 2002, Lim said. --Nawaz Marican, Special to ZDNet
