In what may be the most overshadowed tech announcement in recent times, Sun on Wednesday unveiled its cloud services plan.

The big blue elephant in the room for Sun is the reported takeover talks with IBM.

In a statement (Techmeme), Sun unveiled its Open Cloud Platform, a cloud service powered by the company's technologies such as Java, MySQL and Open Solaris.

Sun is also plotting public clouds for developers, students and startups.

Among other details:

  • Sun released a set of Open APIs under the Creative Commons license;
  • Two services will be launched in the summer. They include the Sun Cloud Storage Service and Sun Cloud Compute Service. If this sounds vaguely familiar it's because Sun's effort is modeled after Amazon Web Services.
  • Sun's services are compatible with Amazon's S3 APIs.
