Sun Microsystems pointed to a handful of new customers Thursday as evidence of success with a version of its Solaris operating system that runs on Intel servers. The customers are GetMore Securities--which said it switched from Windows NT--Gracenote, Maya Online, the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and Tellme Networks.

Sun has offered Solaris for "x86" Intel computers for years, but only recently began selling Intel servers as well. Sun Chief Executive Scott McNealy said in a September interview that if his company has pushed the Intel version of Solaris harder, it might have come to occupy the position of influence that Linux holds today. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun has registered 300,000 licenses for the x86 version Solaris so far.
