Superfast broadband: More fibre exchanges named

156 exchanges to get FTTC access this year and next...

BT Openreach has named another group of exchanges that will be fibre-enabled - opening up access to superfast broadband services from BT or its ISP customers.

The 156 exchanges serve more than 1.5 million business and consumer premises, according to BT Openreach - and include 19 exchanges in Yorkshire, eight in Wales and seven in London. Click here to see the full list of 156 exchanges

All 156 will get fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband, rather than the faster fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) option - so broadband users in these areas can expect fibre-based broadband services offering download speeds of up to 40Mbps coming down the line.

BT Openreach said most of the exchanges in the list will be fibre-enabled during the course of this year, with more than 50 getting fibre by the end of the summer. The remainder will have fibre onboard by the end of 2012.

The 156-strong list is the next largest fibre exchange upgrade announcement since 159 exchanges were named by Openreach last October. The latest list includes the 10 exchanges selected to get fibre as part of BT's Race to Infinity competition.

All BT's fibre exchange upgrades are part of its £2.5bn next-generation broadband rollout plan that will push out superfast fibre-based broadband access to two-thirds of the UK by 2015.

David Campbell, MD of next-generation access for Openreach, said the company has now enabled fibre-broadband access to more than four million premises. "We'll continue to work closely with industry and local and devolved authorities around the country in deciding where to deploy the technology next," he added in a statement.
