Sybase announced Monday the availability of PowerBuilder Enterprise 10.0, a new version of the company's rapid application development (RAD) tool that adds support for J2EE and Microsoft .Net.

PowerBuilder 10.0 builds on the 4GL+ roadmap, the Sybase RAD platform designed for heterogeneous computing environments that integrates design, modeling, development, deployment, and management.

It also includes a copy of Sybase DataWindow .Net for customers working with .Net development tools. DataWindow .Net, announced earlier this month, is designed to simplify application development by reducing development time, coding, and the need for extensive knowledge of complex data access methods and SQL.

New features include Unicode support, which allows developers writing international applications to display multi-byte characters within a single row of a DataWindow; a re-architected XML Web DataWindow; simplified access to Microsoft .Net data and complex database operations via PowerBuilder ADO.Net interfaces; support for Microsoft's Active Accessibility Interface, which enables developers to build applications for end users with disabilities; and application re-factoring and object modeling. The latter give developers the tools to extend and reverse-engineer existing applications for new uses in different architectures, thanks to a plug-in for PowerDesigner, Sybase's enterprise modeling tool.

The Enterprise version of PowerBuilder 10.0 requires a 600MHz Pentium III processor, 128MB of RAM, 210MB of hard drive space (for a typical installation), and Windows 2000 with SP4 or Windows XP Professional with SP1. List price is $2,995, plus $645 for an optional Upgrade Subscription Plan. Users of PowerBuilder 8.x and later can upgrade for $1,495, while users of version 7.x and earlier can upgrade for $1,995.
