T-Mobile has launched Bobsled, a VoIP application that runs on Facebook.

Powered by technology from Vivox, Bobsled was announced on Tuesday. Facebook does not currently have its own voice chat mechanism, although Vivox's non-T-Mobile-branded service has been available for a couple of years.

In a statement, T-Mobile USA vice-president Bob Duea suggested the Facebook launch was just a first step for the new Bobsled brand.

"Bobsled by T-Mobile takes our communications services innovation to a whole new dimension, bringing simple and cost-effective connections to more than half a billion people overnight, allowing people on Facebook to more easily connect and giving voice to social networking," Duea said. "Our new Bobsled brand will evolve in the coming months to provide even more ways for people to connect, no matter what platform, device or mobile provider they are using."

According to T-Mobile, users will even be able to leave voice messages for their friends when they are not available. The company said that video-chat would be added "in the near future", as would calls to mobile and landline US numbers.
