The additional speeds under the EVDO Revision A standard come into effect in Auckland's CBD today, according to a statement issued by Telecom New Zealand, increasing maximum download speeds from 2.4Mbps to 3.1Mbps and upload speeds from 155kbps to 1.8Mbps.
Average upload and download speeds are expected to be 800kbps and 300kbps respectively -- a marginal improvement over the old average of 600-700kbps and 100kbps respectively.
Latency has also been improved under the new standard -- from 90 milliseconds down to a potential 50 millseconds. The network upgrade will cost some NZ$15 million in its entirety and will be rolled out across Telecom's entire 3G network by December 2007.
