"The Morning Briefing" is SmartPlanet's daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we're reading about weapon control.

.) Schools reopen in Newtown, Washington talks gun control. Most students returned to school in the devastated Connecticut community of Newtown on Tuesday for the first time since a gunman's rampage killed 26 people in an elementary school, reviving the gun control debate in Washington.

.) The gun control fight: It's not about guns as weapons but guns as symbols. In the passionate response to the horror of murdered children, much has been written and said about guns, and the need for gun control. Much of it misses the mark, focusing on the danger of guns as weapons, but not their meaning as symbols.

.) Strict gun control laws in South Korea. When news of frequent shooting incidents comes out of the United States, Koreans let out a small sigh of relief for living in a place where gun ownership is strictly illegal.

.) Gun control: Chinks of light. While its influence on Capitol Hill is considerable, the National Rifle Association may not be the political force it was in 1994.

.) Pro-gun control protests as White House promises swift measures -- video.
