The war is on: ntl offers free access

ntl crashes AltaVista's partyCable company ntl stole a march on AltaVista on Tuesday by announcing that it will be the first company to offer completely free Internet access in the UK.

The new service, called ntlworld, will go live for PC users on 17 April. An Internet service via an ordinary television is due to follow shortly after.

Ntlworld will be available nationwide, although consumers must change to ntl as their preferred telecoms provider. Pre-registration for the service began at 9am on Tuesday.
