VoIP service subscription rankings researched and reported this afternoon by ISP-Planet seem to indicate that one-time VoIP subscriber leader Vonage is about to fall from second place to third among VoIP providers in North America.

It wasn't but six months ago that Vonage's subscriber count ranked #1 in the VoIP sector. Yet three months ago, the rankings showed Comcast Digital Voice with a narrow lead. Now, using numbers cited in VoIP provider press releases and quarterly financial reports, it looks like Time Warner Digital Phone is climbing hot on Vonage's heels.

The top five most-subscribed to VoIP providers at the end of June, as researched and cited by ISP-Managing editor Joshua Goldman are:

  1. Comcast Digital Phone (circuit switched customers not counted), 3,500 million
  2. Vonage- 2,450,000
  3. Time Warner Digital Phone- 2,335,000
  4. Skype- 1,800,000
  5. CableVision(cable VoIP under the Optimum Voice brand name)  1,399,000

One more proof that bundled services are getting more subscribers at the cost of pure-plays such as Vonage.
