The results of the monster truck rally of supercomputing have been posted, and the 5,120 processor NEC Earth Simulator is again the clear winner. Size does matter: IBM's highly ranked Blue Gene/L (which is about the size of eight refrigerators), for example, is puny and slow compared to the Earth Simulator, which occupies a room 71 yards long and 55 yards wide.
