New tablet news had been rather slow as of late until this week. First Lenovo announces plans for the LePad, and now Toshiba has unveiled a prototype tablet named the "Smart Pad." Why does everyone like adding "pad" to their slate computer names?

Toshiba Australia's managing director Mark Whittard showed off the Smart Pad down under this week. While not much is known, confirmed details include:

  • It could run on either Android or Windows OS
  • HDMI and USB connectivity available
  • Hosts a multi-touch display

Given that Toshiba is looking towards a late September/early October time frame for launch, we should be seeing more details soon. Anyone else excited about more competition in the tablet market?
