TransACT rolls out VDSL2

Canberra-based telco TransACT announced today that it would upgrade its network to the VDSL2 broadband standard.

The telco claimed in a statement the upgrade would boost customer speeds by up to four times compared to ADSL2+ networks, which top out at 24Mbps. A spokesperson was unable to specify the top speeds the service would reach or how much the telco was going to spend on the network revamp.

The upgrade had already been completed at some sites such as Skyplaza in Woden, with "additional" sites to be upgraded by the end of June, although the spokesperson could not say whether that meant the whole or a portion of the rest of the intended upgrade.

There was no information provided as to pricing of the new services. The company said it had also recently made an investment to roll out fibre-to-the-home broadband using gigabit passive optical network (GPON) to thousands of homes in estates across the territory.

"Through this VDSL2 upgrade program and the roll-out of FTTH to selected new suburbs, TransACT is heavily investing in Canberra to ensure that the broadband access we provide is first-class," TranACT CEO Ivan Slavich said in a statement.

TransACT is one of the bidders in the running to build the government's $4.7 billion National Broadband Network, having put in a state-based bid.
