There have been a plethora of third-party Twitter apps for the iPhone available since the opening of the iTunes app store, but now Twitter itself has finally unleashed an official version.

Actually, the app itself isn't entirely new, but rather a revamped version of Tweetie, which the social networking site bought out recently. Free of the annoying ads and unnecessary graphics found in most of the other third-party versions, the official Twitter app comes across as clean and straight-forward.

The usual necessities are there, like making basic updates plus searching tweets and trending topics. Users can also instantly shrink URLs and make use of the geo-tagging feature when writing out those 140-character messages.

And just like tweeting itself, the app is free. Twitter enthusiasts with an iPhone can head over to iTunes for the download.
