UK firm Concept Technology has launched what it claims is the first mobile NC based on Sun's Java operating system. Called Pic Pocket, the device enables users to download Java applications from the Internet.

Concept, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bournmouth-based distribution and manufacturing group Hugh Symons, has classified Pic Pocket as a handheld device, which will provide JavaOS 1.1, Sun's HotJava browser incorporating a Java Virtual Machine and networking support for Ethernet and ISDN. Internet connection is made via GSM while Pic Pocket also supports flash memory to store the Java applications.

The product is currently in alpha testing and is not due to ship until Q2 next year. Pricing has yet to be fixed although the company has admitted that it is aiming for a $1,000 price tag.
