UK high street chain backs open source

Summary:One of the largest recruitment consultancies in the UK is embracing open source to manage its documents

UK-based recruitment consultancy Reed is deploying an open source enterprise content management system known as Alfresco.

The recruitment consultancy, which has 3,000 employees in 305 branches across the UK, is initially deploying the open source product in its recruitment division. It will later deploy it in other parts of the company, including its HR outsourcing and training divisions, Alfresco, the company behind the open source product in question, said on Tuesday.

The open source application will be used to provide online access to documents relating to training, client accounts and best-practice procedures. Alfresco claims its product was chosen over alternatives because of its ease of use, lower cost and standards compliance.

Alfresco also launched the first production release of its product on Tuesday. The company claims to be the first non-proprietary offering in the enterprise content management space, although there are a number of open source CMS projects, including Plone and Mambo.

More information on the Alfresco product can be found here.
