VMware launches Boxer, a mobile mail app for AirWatch and Workspace ONE customers
EMC-owned VMware is rolling out a new mobile mail, calendar, and contacts app for VMware AirWatch and Workspace ONE customers.

Dubbed VMware Boxer, the app is touted to have enterprise-level security features packaged in a consumer-grade user experience. Most of the technology powering the app stems from VMware's acquisition of Austin-based email startup Boxer last October.
When VMware bought Boxer, the goal was to merge the startup with AirWatch to bolster VMware's suite of enterprise mobility management services revolving around secure access to email, content and apps.
VMware was drawn to Boxer by its personal information management (PIM) product for iOS and Android devices, which uses a container approach to app management and security. But the startup was also credited with the creation of a UX which VMware CTO Noah Wasmer described as "precise and blazing fast."
VMware Boxer takes those security and interface features and wraps them into one enterprise app that Boxer founder and current VMware VP Andrew Eye says is "the most customizable email app on in market today."
On the user side, Boxer features include integrated calendar access, customizable settings and optional bulk action functionality. Boxer also has a predictive folders feature that incorporates aspects of machine learning in order to make folder suggestions based on past user actions.
On the IT side, Boxer allows admins to configure and manage security policies at a granular level via its use of containerization, built-in compliance, and data leakage protection. Boxer is available as part of a shared or dedicated cloud, on premise or in a hybrid deployment and is compatible with Microsoft Office 365.
The app is available today for AirWatch and Workspace ONE customers on iOS. There's no word on whether an Android iteration is in the works, but Eye said his team "will continue to build Boxer security and platforms in the coming months."
