VMware partners with Box for mobile collaboration security

Summary:The companies plan to manage and secure third-party applications by using the configurations built into iOS, a framework they said enables centralized policy management.

Virtualization vendor VMware and enterprise storage provider Box announced a partnership that will bring security capabilities from VMware AirWatch to Box storage users.

The key goal of the partnership is to offer enterprise users a more secure level of collaboration across mobile devices.

The companies plan to manage and secure third-party applications by using the configurations built into iOS, a framework they said enables centralized policy management. The new model is ISV application agnostic and mobile device management vendor agnostic, which the companies said will help the industry move toward a more common standards approach to configuring and securing third-party applications.

Sanjay Poonen, EVP and GM of end-user computing for VMware, said today's mobile workforce now requires access to files, applications and data, which leads to the demand for more security:

Enabling users to take full advantage of powerful enterprise collaboration services requires a mobile security model that protects sensitive data and information. With VMware and Box, customers will be able to take advantage of VMware's powerful end-user computing solutions in a fundamentally unique way, without compromising security.

Box CEO Aaron Levie added:

Cloud and mobile technologies are unlocking new ways of working, but businesses need to know that information is secure. We're excited to work with VMware to introduce a new model that will enable customers to secure content and collaborate from anywhere, on any device, helping our joint customers be more competitive and agile than ever before.
