VMware updates Horizon Suite, adds to Android VMware ready roster

VMware on Tuesday updated its Horizon Suite to better support mobile devices and brought the total roster of Android VMware ready devices to 12.

The news, outlined at VMworld Europe, comes as many virtualization players are moving to support mobile devices a they do desktops and laptops.

Specifically, VMware issued the following updates:

  • VMware Horizon View 5.2 gets a new user interface via graphics acceleration and Nvidia GRID technology, improvements to remote desktops delivered through HTML5 browsers and support for Windows 8.1, Apple iOS 7 and Google Chromebooks. VMware also added an optional plug-in that allows for secure remote connections to virtual desktops if the Horizon view connection server is down.

  • VMware Horizon Mirage 4.3 adds enhanced Windows 7 migration tools and a Web management console.

  • VMware Horizon Workspace also supports Sony's Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra smartphones. Horizon Workspace supports dual persona functions (personal and work) on Android phones. VMware has 12 VMware ready Android devices.

  • VMware Socialcast, a feature that offers collaboration and ideation to a company.

The updates will be available in the fourth quarter.
