VMware presented its Virtualization Forum in Orlando yesterday. I thought I'd ride over and experience the event for myself. Thunderstorms in the area made me reconsider riding over and so, I drove to the event. It's not wise to ride when a lightening storm is going on overhead. The rider's head is often the high point in the nearby area making an enticing target for lightening.

The presentations introduced me to very few new concepts. I learned more by walking around the vendor area and seeing their demonstrations. I learned even more by speaking with representatives of local companies that are using VMware's technology in their own environments.

I hope to be able to bring you some of their stories in the future. At this point, however, all of them asked me to keep our conversations private. In summary, however, the VMware technology has required the companies to spend money training IT people in the concepts of virtual machine software, management of virtual resources. Due to what is hoped to be short term increase in people-related costs, most of the representatives pointed out that they haven't yet realized the dramatic savings promised in the marketing presentations. Many had reduced their overall hardware-related costs. All of them expected to see greater savings in the future.
