A Segway Human Transporter will carry home (or at least to the parking lot) the winner of the PalmSource/Orange Smartphone Application Contest, which has a deadline of September 15.

PalmSource is the force behind the Palm Operating System, which is found in handhelds and smartphones from vendors including PalmOne, Kyocera Wireless, Samsung, and Tapwave. Orange is a leading European mobile communications company. The contest was designed to encourage the development of Palm OS wireless applications that use Orange's GPRS network.

Although some Orange smartphones incorporate the Windows Smartphone operating system, the company also sells the Palm OS-based PalmOne Treo 600.

The winner of the contest will receive a Segway Human Transporter. A Treo 600 will be awarded to the winner in each of four application categories: localization, best use of a wireless network in a standalone application, most innovative use of a data network, and best phone utility.

Awards will be presented during the final day of Orange Code Camp, a developer's conference scheduled for September 13-15 in Poitiers, France. PalmSource will work with Orange to provide guidance and technical support to developers prior to and during the event.

Orange Code Camp registrants who e-mail their entries to PalmSource by September 6 will be eligible for feedback from the company's technical staff. Final entries are due by 8 a.m. local time on September 15, the final day of the conference.
