Web site owners need to understand business to survive

Creative minds just can't do the math according to UK ISP Netlink, which reckons the geniuses behind the UK's most popular sites need to get a hold on commercial reality if they are to survive.

A typical example says Netlink, is Link-it, started by web enthusiast Kerry Tucker, who, in his spare time has made Link-it so popular it's causing an expensive bandwidth problem and faces the axe.

Link-it uses over 22.4 Gbit/s of bandwidth per month and could cost Tucker an estimated £6,864 per year to host. "I can barely afford my own massive phone bill let alone an amount like this," says Tucker. He is now looking for sponsorship to keep the site going.

However, Clive Jones, Netlink's sales and marketing manager doesn't see Link-it's plight being as grave as Tucker thinks: "I'm a bit surprised Kerry hasn't got in touch, there's definitely the opportunity to make enough money to keep the site going with the amount of traffic going through the site."

Jones sees the predicament as typical of creative minds losing out to commercial reality: "I see really good sites going to waste because the creative people behind them don't seem to be able to pick up the phone to sort out this sort of issue. There are plenty of opportunities to generate income on a site like this."

Link-it and Netlink are now working together to find a solution. We'll update you as soon as we have further news.
