Got a spare Thunderbolt port on your Mac doing nothing? How about hooking up Western Digital's fastest ever My Book external hard drive to it.
The new drive, called the My Book VelociRaptor Duo, uses a pair of super-fast 10,000 RPM 1 TB Velociraptor hard drives combined with Thunderbolt technology to give both super-fast data read/write speeds and fast connectivity between the drives and the Mac (Mac OS X 10.6.8 or higher). The high-speed Thunderbolt connection allows for the transfer of a full-length Blu-ray movie in under a minute.
The drives are highly customizable, allowing you to configure the dual-drive storage to suit your needs. If you want speed you can choose RAID 0, or RAID 1 if you want data protection. Alternatively, you can use JBOD and access each of the drives separately.
Each My Book VelociRaptor Duo comes with twin Thunderbolt ports that to allow you to daisy chain more drives or additional Thunderbolt devices.
The system is also user serviceable, so if a drive fails, you can quickly and easily replace it.
Also, to aid with system recovery in the event of a problem, you can boot your Mac from the external drive.
"The My Book VelociRaptor Duo is the fastest and most reliable high performance consumer storage device on the market today," says Jody Bradshaw, senior director of consumer storage solutions at Western Digital. "Creative professionals now have access to a super-charged storage drive that will keep pace with even the most demanding projects. Daisy-chaining multiple My Book VelociRaptor Duo devices together offers even greater speed, more capacity and flexibility".
This sort of storage doesn't come cheap though, and will set you back $899.99.
