Hard drive giant Western Digital said Monday that Steve Milligan, currently president of the company, will become CEO January 2.
Current Western Digital CEO John Coyne is retiring.
By naming an insider, Western Digital should be able to maintain continuity. Western Digital, along with Seagate, is a top hard drive manufacturer. Western Digital also recently closed the acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
Milligan had been Western Digital's CFO from 2004 to 2007 and left to the company to join Hitachi's storage unit. Milligan joined Hitachi Global Storage Technologies as CFO in 2007 and later became CEO. When Western Digital closed the Hitachi purchase, Milligan became president of Western Digital.
Western Digital's biggest feat in the last year has been navigating supply chain disruption due to 2011 flooding in Thailand. The company said it has mostly recovered.
