Western Digital's SanDisk demos 1TB SD card
Western Digital demonstrated a prototype of a 1 terabyte SanDisk SD card in a move that foreshadows the ramping storage capacity curve.
Data packrats rejoice.
Western Digital, which closed the SanDisk acquisition in May, touches storage from the data center to the PC to the phone and camera. The 1TB SD card was outlined at Photokina 2016 since it'll be initially pitched to photographers and videographers.
According to Western Digital, SanDisk 1TB SDXC could become commonplace as high resolution 4K and 8K content takes root. SanDisk first launched the 64MB SD card 16 years ago.
Western Digital used its proprietary technology to double the capacity of the 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO® SDXC UHS-I Memory Card that was launched in 2014.
Since the 1TB SanDisk SDXC card is a prototype, there's no pricing yet. But the idea of carrying around 1TB in your device is likely to find demand even for those of us who won't play around much with virtual reality and ultra high-definition video.
