Why the Skype-MySpace deal won't work all that well
On a superficial level , the deal between eBay's Skype and MySpace to enable voice chat calls through the MySpaceIM client or the Skype client to Skype and MySpace members holds promise as a big-time force multiplier.
Consider the numbers: more than 110 million monthly active MySpace users and 220 million Skype registered users around the world- but only 25 million MySpace users have downloaded and installed the MySpaceIM client.
So what's my problem with this deal? Let me tell you why am I skeptical.
Here's the issue. Think MySpace, and you automatically think of a demographic heavily titled toward teens and twenty-somethings.
I could be overgeneralizing, but to me that's a cell crowd. Maybe some of them use Skype but even though Skype would be a click away under this new arrangement, I just have this gut feeling that a large number of MySpace users are not Skype users. It is likely that if they've heard of Skype at all, they consider it nerdy.
MySpace is not a place for nerds. Not all that many of them.
Now I would like to ask you three questions.
