When people ask me about the tech highlights of 2007, two products stand out from the crowd - Nintendo's Wii games console and Apple's iPhone.  Both these products have enjoyed stratospheric levels of hype which has resulted in very strong demand, but which product was the biggest hit of 2007?

Wii vs. iPhone - Which was the biggest hit of 2007?
I guess before we go on to consider which was the biggest hit of 2007, we first need to think about why these products became the successes they did in the first place, after all, neither product was new in terms of what it did.  The Wii was a games console emerging into a highly competitive market which seemed focused on processing power and graphics and the iPhone was a cellphone that had the Apple logo on it.  Instead, what both products did was shake up an existing market - The Wii moved focus away from how much power could be crammed into a console and instead concentrated on how much fun the gamer could have, while the iPhone changed the way we interact with cellphones, abandoning the traditional keypad in favor of a touchscreen.

Without a doubt the effect that both products had on their respective markets will be seen and felt for years to comeThe iPhone also meshed the cellphone and the Internet is a way that hadn't been done previously, while the Wii opened up gaming to those that didn't want 100-hour epic games or games where the primary purpose is to kill or be killed.  Both devices also revolutionized the input system.  Apple with the multi-touch, software controlled input system that allowed functions to be hidden when not needed, and Nintendo with the Wii Remote which bought a different level of gaming to Wii titles compared to the same title on a different platform.

Without a doubt the effect that both products had on their respective markets will be seen and felt for years to come.

But there are also some crucial differences between the Wii and the iPhone.  Speaking from the point of view of marketing, the iPhone is a high-end, pseudo-luxury piece of consumer electronics that commands quite a high price and a lengthy commitment to the product enforced by a contract.  The Wii on the other hand is priced so that it is aimed at the mass-market.  It's for people who don't want an HD DVD or Blu-ray player, for those who don't need high definition gaming.  The Wii has transformed console gaming into a social activity.  Style-wise the iPhone is nothing short of perfect and no expense has been spared in using metal and glass to make it look and feel luxury.  The Wii on the other hand is, well, somewhat basic.

So, which is product is the biggest hit of 2007?  Well, it's a tough choice but my vote has to go to the Wii.  Why?  Because the games industry is highly competitive and what Nintendo did with the Wii was plucky and taking an awful chance, but it ended up being a chance that paid off.  Also, for a product to have been released for more than a year and still be in such demand that getting one for the holidays will be hit-and-miss despite 1.8 million being made each month shows that the Wii struck a chord with the public in a way that is quite rare.
