Will the PlayStation 4 come with Kinect-like controls? Hopefully not

Summary:A report says that Sony may follow Microsoft's lead and introduce controller-free gaming with the PlayStation 4. Is it a smart move?

If you watched even a few moments of Microsoft's press briefing at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, you would have likely gotten the sense that the company is going full steam ahead with the controller-free gaming of its Kinect peripheral. And you'd be right.

But could Sony be going a similar route? That may be the case according to a report from DigiTimes, which says that Sony's next console is set to go into production later this year. Set for a 2012 release, the PlayStation 4 will come with an interesting addition: Kinect-like controls. Or so say Sony's Taiwan-based component makers.

But how likely is the move? Considering that Sony latched onto motion controls not long after Nintendo's successful experiment with the Wii, copying the controller-free gaming approach wouldn't exactly be out of the ordinary. But will the gaming populous even care about motion gaming by that point? Judging by Nintendo's approach with the Wii U, I'd say its pretty clear that interest in motion gaming has waned somewhat. Sony may be wise not to follow Microsoft too closely on this one.
