Win 98 delayed until Q2

Microsoft has delayed the release of Windows 98 until the second quarter, meaning that the operating system may not ship until the end of June on current schedules.

The firm explained the delay by saying the release will now cover upgrades for users of both Windows 3.1 and 95. Pundits have recently accused Microsoft of not providing a clear upgrade path for users of 3.1 which retains a huge user base, especially in big in business.

Although no surprise - Windows OS releases have traditionally been plagued by tardy delivery - the news hit the Redmond, Washington behemoth's shares, knocking more than five per cent off the company's stock value.
