Microsoft Windows 7 has just overtaken Windows Vista in global usage, according to Netmarketshare numbers based on monitoring websites. Windows 7 grew by 0.76 percentage points in July to take 14.46% of the market, while Vista fell by 0.34 points to 14.43%.

But as Netmarketshare points out: “Windows XP is still the leading operating system by far, with double the share of Vista and 7 combined.”

Windows XP had 61.87% of the market in July. Mac OS X 10.6 (2.84%) and OS X 10.5 (1.82%) came fourth and fifth.

Netmarketshare reckons that, in all, Windows had a usage share of 91.32% with the Mac on 5.06%. All varieties of Linux managed 0.93%, and the iPhone 0.70%.

Netmarketshare’s numbers are not necessarily an accurate guide to the number of OS installations, but they do appear to reflect global trends.
