Microsoft Windows XP will cease to exist in Australian federal government agencies by the end of this year, according to the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO).
Federal agencies outed the timing in response to an AGIMO survey conducted mid last year to ascertain the timing of desktop upgrade paths.
"Agencies have advised AGIMO that those currently using a Windows-based environment plan to upgrade to Windows 7," the Department of Finance and Deregulation said.
The death knell for the operating system comes a decade after its retail release.
Others including Medicare are expected to make the upgrade to Windows 7 during the year.
