Human capital management software vendor Workday on Wednesday named former Amgen executive Diana McKenzie as the company's chief information officer.

McKenzie was the CIO of Amgen for the last 12 years. With Workday, she'll lead the company's entire information services organization, as well as help refine Workday's pitch to customer CIOs.

Speaking on the CIO appointment, Workday co-president Mark Peek said McKenzie's "passion for developing teams and driving companies forward with technology will help us move through our next phase of growth."

Workday has faced some challenges lately as it tries to navigate a growth strategy in the face of increasing competition. Workday has a large addressable market for its human resource management tools, but legacy vendors such as SAP and Oracle have upped the ante on customer acquisition. But even though Workday is experiencing the same seasonality as other SaaS providers, the company is still landing high profile customers.
