Xiaomi launches GoPro-style camera

Xiaomi's new Yi Sports Camera is equipped with a Sony sensor and can take 1080p video under 40 metres of water -- and is available for only $64.

Chinese technology company Xiaomi has launched a sports camera that is capable of shooting 1080p videos at 60fps under 40-metre-deep water, as reported by Chinese media.

The device, which is named the Yi Sports Camera and was launched on March 2, is equipped with a 1.6-megapixel Sony back-illuminated CMOS image sensor and an Ambarella A7LS processor that shoots 720p videos at 120fps and 480p videos at 240fps. The Yi doesn't have optical image stabilisation, and it can't take 4K videos, however.

The camera is powered by a 1010mAh battery, and supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connections. Users can also download an app onto their mobile device and share videos on the internet.

The Yi Sports Camera is the same size as the GoPro Hero 4, but comes with a much smaller price tag. The basic version of the Yi cam is priced at 399 yuan ($64), while an advanced version with a convertible selfie pole costs an extra 100 yuan ($16).

According to a 36kr report published in February, Yi, a brand owned by Xiaomi, specialises in making cameras. Its last product was a smart home camera, which only costs 149 yuan ($24).

Xiaomi recently announced the launch of its new smartphone, the Mi4, in India.
