Xiaomi to double handset sales in 2013

Xiaomi will double handset sales this year to gain ground on Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market.

According to Bloomberg, the Chinese smartphone vendor's CEO Lei Jun said it will sell 15 million handsets this year. Lei, who is also the co-founder of Xiaomi and chairman of Kingsoft Corporation, was speaking at a media briefing at Fortune Global Forum on Thursday.

He also added Xiaomi did not have to be big and he would be happy with "a small and beautiful company".

"I don't care to surpass Apple, I never thought about surpassing anyone," Lei said. "I care more about quality of the product and user experience. We rarely look at competitors and what they do."

Xiaomi's smartphone market share in China was 2.6 percent in the first quarter, compared to Samsung's 17.7 percent and Apple's 9.7 percent, according to Gartner in the report.

The company also said it sold 7.19 million handsets with sales reaching US$2 billion last year , with each Xiaomi handset selling for an average of US$279. The company also aims to sell more than 10 million phones in 2013 by expanding to overseas markets including Hong Kong and Taiwan.
