Motorola's Xoom is receiving an update that prepares the tablet for Flash rich media functionality, the company said late on Thursday.

In a post put up on Twitter late on Thursday, the company said: "Motorola Xoom update rolling out in phases starting tonight and includes required enhancements to support upcoming Adobe Flash Player 10.2." The news came hours before the iPad 2, the second iteration of what is so far the most popular tablet computer, was due to go on sale in the US.

The iPad 2, which does not support Flash and therefore offers a less complete web-browsing experience, is scheduled to appear in UK stores on 25 March. The company is not allowing pre-orders. Pricing for the original iPad has started to fall at some operators such as 3, which on Friday said it was dropping the device's price by £100 and cutting the monthly connectivity charge for it by £5.

The Xoom has also not yet gone on sale in the UK, although it is likely to appear by the summer. Motorola has not yet said when Flash itself will be rolled out to the device.
