Yammer nabs oneDrum for Google Docs, Microsoft Office tools

Yammer acquires oneDrum, giving the enterprise social network even more collaboration tools and support for Google Docs and Microsoft Office files.

Yammer is expanding its repertoire of file sharing and collaboration services for businesses with the acquisition of oneDrum.

The U.K.-based startup brings even more social-minded work tools to the enterprise social network. OneDrum has developed a peer-to-peer desktop application that connects Google Docs with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), enabling users to be able to collaborate, co-edit and share these documents in real time.

Thus, Yammer will be able to boost its own real-time document editor feature, Pages, with desktop sync capabilities, enabling file folders to be shared across multiple users’ desktops. Furthermore, new versions and changes to documents can be viewed in the Yammer Ticker, and the platform will support reverting to previously saved versions.

These documents can also be viewed on mobile devices, can be co-edited simultaneously, and can be full-text searchable within Yammer.

For the security-conscious users, document data in motion will be encrypted using 256-bit SSL/TLS and data at rest will be encrypted using 256-bit AES. Content can be deemed read-only by administrators, and viewing permissions are also controlled by group access. Thus, if a user is removed from a group or network, so is their access to the respective files.

Once the deal is done, all of oneDrum’s employees will join Yammer with CEO Jasper Westaway on board to navigate the merger. Yammer is planning on taking advantage of its new resources rather quickly as it will offering oneDrum solutions as a desktop client download by this summer.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
