ZTE becomes third largest smartphone vendor in US

Summary:Chinese smartphone maker accounted for 17 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in first-quarter 2013, where its growth was boosted primarily by prepaid subscribers.

ZTE's prepaid smartphone market share in the United States rose to 17 percent in the first quarter of 2013, making it the third largest smartphone supplier in the country.

These figures were from ITG Market Research, according to a report by Wall Street Journal.

A separate report Friday by China's state-owned newspaper People's Daily said ZTE was also the fastest growing smartphone supplier in the U.S. last year. Its fast expansion was attributed mainly to the rapid growth of the U.S. prepaid market. The Chinese smartphone maker also strengthened partnerships with mainstream American carriers and launched a total of 18 prepaid smartphone models in 2012, according to the Chinese paper.

ZTE has long committed to bringing quality communications technology to users, offering a range of mobile devices including tablets and smartphones, ZTE's senior vice president and North America CEO, Cheng Lixin, was quoted in the People's Daily report.

The Chinese vendor currently is the world's fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer in terms of unit shipments . ZTE, however, along with major Chinese networking equipment maker Huawei, have been under investigation by the U.S., European , as well as Indian government for allegedly spying on the respective countries.
