Asus may have expected a bigger impact from the launch of Windows 8, but that hasn't stopped it from pumping out more and more new systems that run the latest version of Microsoft's flagship OS. Last week, the company announced details about its Transformer AiO desktop/tablet hybrid, and now it's unveiling a pair of new Windows 8 laptops.

The VivoBook S500 and S550 are the largest of the VivoBook family of notebooks, with each sporting a 15.6-inch LED-backlit screen. The displays also support multitouch, which Microsoft is emphasizing for new laptops running Windows 8, to the point where it's willing to offer discounts on the OS and Microsoft Office to manufacturers to spur adoption.

Both models use Intel's third-generation Core processors (a.k.a. Ivy Bridge), with the S500 using a Core i5-3317U CPU, while the S550 offers the choice of a Core i3-3217U or Core i7-3517U in addition to the i5-3317U. Either system comes with 6GB of RAM and 500GB hard drives and 24GB of solid state storage for faster boot times, with the S550 also throwing in a DVD burner.

If the new notebooks aren't the sexiest on the block, they at least don't require you to break the bank. The S500 is listed at $699, while you can pick up a S550 with Core i3 processor for $749 from The S500 is available from such online retailers as Amazon and Tiger Direct.
